Express yourself (and your ideas)!

Whether it’s through painting or performance there are lots of opportunities to express yourself during your time in the sixth form.

You’re an individual, but sometimes, when you have to conform to being part of something bigger it doesn’t always seem that way. Because of that, we’re keen to give you every chance to express yourself in a creative way. It’s important to put some of yourself into your work, your ideas and thoughts are valid and real, and you should be able to express them to others in a number of ways.

You’ll have the chance to create performance and dance through drama classes and to communicate your feelings in a variety of artworks, from painting and drawing, to sculpture and textiles. We have excellent facilities and great staff to help you really get to grips with getting your ideas into your work.

And, don’t be shy! Self-expression, as performance or artwork, is a way of communicating your ideas: as a sixth former your need to do that is greater than ever before. And, as you move on to persuade university administrators and prospective employers that you are the person they should give the course place or job to, your need to communicate effectively becomes even more important. Working in the arts is a great way to boost confidence and improve your communication skills.

You’ll also have opportunities to appreciate the arts. You will have many chances to look at artworks and exhibitions, and attend performances throughout your time with us. Visual and expressive arts are an important part of our cultural life - tap into the arts and you’ll be connecting with a long history and tradition of sociable, human communication. And, an understanding of the arts increases your general knowledge and thinking skills, which are both valuable assets as you move forward.

Remember, it isn’t just about learning. Art based activities are a serious part of your education, but they will never be dull. Even if you’re not opting for an arts based subject, there are many extra-curricular opportunities available - so get in amongst it, have a laugh, improve your confidence, believe in your ideas and express them in a creative way!
